He secured the position during the AU summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 15, 2025, defeating Kenya's former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, and Madagascar's ex-Foreign Minister, Richard Randriamandrato. Youssouf will serve a four-year term, succeeding Moussa Faki of Chad, who has held the post since 2017.
