The grim reality of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system has been laid bare, as harrowing images of survivors from the Lutumba Tollgate bus accident, which occurred along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, circulate online. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Pictures showing broken limbs crudely splinted with cardboard and tape have gone viral, sparking outrage across social media. The tragic collision, involving a Beitbridge-bound Urban Connect bus and a haulage truck carrying magnesium to Chirundu near the Lutumba toll gate on the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway last Thursday, claimed 25 lives and left scores seriously injured, fighting for their lives in critical condition. Last year, Neshuro District Hospital, one of the closest medical facilities to the accident site, was already creaking under the strain of inadequate resources. Reports had it that the hospital lacked a functional mortuary, kitchen, and even a washing machine, with nurses resorting to using sticks to clean hospital linen – a telling sign of the neglect plaguing the health system nationwide. Cabinet ministers, who descended upon the accident scene and later visited victims in hospital, seemed unfazed by the desperate situation. Victims lay helpless before them, while doctors and nurses, working their fingers to the bone, struggled to save lives, only to be let down by a government that seemingly does not prioritize proper healthcare infrastructure capable of responding to such crises. Transport Minister Felix Tapiwa Mhona, Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, and Matebeleland South Provincial Minister Eveline Ndlovu were photographed posing at an unnamed hospital, believed to be Neshuro District Hospital, with accident victims whose limbs were held together by cardboard and tape – a photo opportunity that has been widely condemned as a callous public relations stunt. Further adding insult to injury, it emerged that the Urban Connect bus, responsible for 24 deaths, was operating without a valid route permit, and the driver lacked a valid retest certificate, pointing to a wider problem of lax regulations and enforcement. Since Saturday, critics have been pulling no punches in their condemnation of Mnangagwa’s government, describing the incident as an utter embarrassment and a damning indictment of the government’s unwillingness to invest in well-equipped hospitals for the benefit of ordinary citizens. Renowned lawyer and former Mt Pleasant MP Advocate Fadzayi Mahere wasted no time in holding Information Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana to account, peppering him with pointed questions. The former Zanu PF representative in the United Kingdom and Europe remains conspicuously silent, likely feeling the sting of the criticism himself. “We are not letting this healthcare issue go,” Mahere posted on X on Sunday. “Why is the practice of using makeshift cardboard boxes to treat fractures so widespread in our public hospitals? Where is the dignity? Surely, you must all resign. This level of incompetence borders on the criminal. It’s a mess. We need new leaders.” Mahere continued her broadside in another post on X Sunday, February 16, 2025: “They promised us affordable, quality healthcare. Instead, they have given us cardboard boxes to use as casts to treat fractures, no clean water in public hospitals, torn hospital beds and no medication. It’s a mess.” Self-exiled Zanu PF loyalist Kudzai Mutisi, based in South Africa, also weighed in, lambasting his own party’s ministers as useless, unable to deliver even the most basic services to the people. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. “A Cabinet Minister is witnessing FIRST HAND how his colleague in the Ministry of Health and Child Care has FAILED to do simple things. Felix Mhona will leave the hospital and SAY NOTHING about a dysfunctional system he witnessed. “In fact, he might join the 2030ists asking for more time to play. If you can’t do it now, then you certainly won’t do it even if given 40 more years. The current team of ministers lacks urgency and has misplaced priorities,” said Mutisi in his X post on Sunday. Even former cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere, who served under the late President Robert Mugabe and is himself considered by many to bear some culpability for the systemic deficiencies crippling Zimbabwe’s healthcare, has now weighed in, adding his voice to the chorus of condemnation levelled at Mnangagwa’s government over the deplorable treatment of accident victims. “This is not normal,” he posted Sunday. He joins the fray with a clear vested interest, as it would be imprudent to discount how much the issue will improve his standing amongst the masses. Kasukuwere’s erstwhile colleague, former cabinet minister Professor Jonathan Moyo – a figure currently out of favour with many both within and outside Zanu PF, and seemingly sitting on the fence regarding Mnangagwa’s 2030 term extension, waiting to see which way the wind blows – could not remain silent, despite his recent show of support for the government. He posted on his X account on Sunday: “This dispiriting image is an indictment of the state of the administration and delivery of public health in the country.” _*Sean Mnangagwa Commanding a Military Battalion Hunting Down Geza*_ Tensions within Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu PF, have reached a boiling point as infighting intensifies over President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s controversial bid to extend his term to 2030. The power struggle has taken a dramatic turn, with reports of a failed military operation allegedly orchestrated by soldiers loyal to Major Sean Mnangagwa, the president’s son, to capture Bombshell Geza, a key figure in the War Veterans’ opposition to Mnangagwa’s extended rule. According to sources close to the matter, Bombshell Geza, a vocal critic of the president’s ambitions, has been in hiding at a secure location. Soldiers allegedly attempted to seize him in a covert operation, but the mission failed, resulting in violent skirmishes. The incident has further exposed the deep fractures within Zanu PF and the lengths to which factions are willing to go to secure their interests. “It was chaos. Small arms gunfire erupted, and it was clear that this was not just a political dispute but a full-blown battle for control,” an anonymous source revealed. The failed operation has raised concerns about the militarisation of Zimbabwe’s political landscape and the potential for further violence as the 2030 succession debate rages on. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. President Mnangagwa, who came to power in 2017 following a military-assisted coup that ousted long-time leader Robert Mugabe, has faced growing opposition within his own party. His bid to extend his rule to 2030 has been met with resistance from factions who argue that the move undermines democratic principles and risks destabilizing the country. The involvement of Major Sean Mnangagwa in the alleged operation has added a new layer of complexity to the crisis. Critics accuse the president of nepotism and using his family to consolidate power, while supporters argue that the younger Mnangagwa is merely protecting his father’s legacy. Meanwhile, ordinary Zimbabweans are growing increasingly weary of the political infighting. “Manje maCitizens will come to KG6 kana zvadaro,” one Harare resident remarked, suggesting that the public may soon take matters into their own hands if the situation continues to deteriorate. Political analysts warn that the ongoing turmoil could have far-reaching consequences for Zimbabwe’s stability. “The infighting within Zanu PF is not just a party issue; it’s a national crisis,” said Dr. Tendai Moyo, a political science lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe. “If left unchecked, it could lead to widespread unrest and further economic decline.” As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Zanu PF’s next moves. Will President Mnangagwa succeed in his bid to extend his term, or will the internal resistance force a change in direction? For now, the streets remain tense, and the future of Zimbabwe hangs in the balance. _*’Bombshell' Geza dismisses arrest claims, vows to push for change*_ War veteran Blessed Geza has dismissed claims that he has been arrested or gone into hiding, assuring supporters that he remains safe and will soon address a press conference. In a message to HStv, Geza reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for change, despite alleged threats and misinformation circulating about his whereabouts. “We are ready to bring change, and no amount of threats and lies will derail the struggle. The signal is coming," he declared. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Geza, now a celebrity war veteran, is facing four charges including inciting public violence, two counts of undermining the authority of the president as well as theft. Geza has gained popularity since the beginning of this year when he launched a campaign against Mnangagwa's bid to stay beyond 2028, a time when the Zimbabwean leader's two term limit lapses. In his place, Geza wants VP Chiwenga to take over. His outspoken demands for Mnangagwa to dump his ED2030 mantra has invited the wrath of the state which has seen police open criminal charges against him. Geza's prosecution could be construed as victimisation on a man who has braved a brutal regime to decampaign Mnangagwa's unpopular bid to stay on. _*’Nothing amiss about amending Constitution,’ insists Mnangagwa’s henchman*_ THERE is a strong sense of unity, singleness of purpose and comradeship within the Presidium, with the ruling party’s top leadership unanimously supporting President Mnangagwa’s continued leadership up to 2030 to continue with his transformative development programmes. This follows Zanu PF’s resolution Number 1 at the party’s Annual National People’s Conference held last October in Bulawayo to extend President Mnangagwa’s term of office until 2030. Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere announced this on Saturday at the launch of the Presidential War Veterans Fund, Presidential War Veterans Rural Home Scheme, and Presidential War Veterans Borehole Drilling Scheme at Dewedzo High School in Makoni West Constituency. Dr Muswere, who is also the legislator for Makoni West and Zanu PF Central Committee member, said there was nothing amiss about amending the Constitution as the supreme law has provision allowing for that. “To those who think there are divisions at the top, listen, there is no noise in the cockpit. There is unity. Do you think there is anyone who loves the President more than those in the Presidium? Those people are united. Our leaders are truly united. There is no disharmony, we are driving the boat towards 2030,” said Dr Muswere, adding that extending President Mnangagwa’s leadership was an opportunity to consolidate the ongoing economic, infrastructural and social transformation programmes, guaranteeing continuity in policies aimed at achieving Vision 2030. Stability and consistency in leadership, he said, are crucial for realising the country’s long-term goals. Dr Muswere said the party, from districts to the Central Committee, passed the resolution to amend the Constitution to allow the party leadership to continue beyond 2028. “There is nothing unconstitutional about amending the constitution. The role of Parliament is multifaceted, encompassing oversight, representation, and legislative responsibilities, which include amending the constitution. Notably, our current Constitution is not the first we have had. We began with the Lancaster House Constitution and in 1999, a new Constitution was proposed, which went to a referendum where the majority voted against it. “In 2013, under the inclusive Government, we adopted our present Constitution. Parliament’s duty is to enact laws, including delegating legislative authority to other legally and properly constituted institutions. Therefore, it’s untrue to claim that a constitution cannot be amended; after all, the constitution is made for the people,” he said. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Dr Muswere also defended the First Lady’s philanthropic work across the country. “I would like to address those who criticise the First Lady’s efforts. The truth is, she has done a wonderful job and we remain resolute in our support for her cultural, humanitarian, health and educational initiatives, which contribute to our country’s macro-economic growth. We should continue to support the First Lady. She has visited Makoni South, Headlands, and Makoni Central, and will also be visiting Makoni North to unite and assist us in various programmes. Her initiatives have attracted numerous investors, injecting significant funds, and we appreciate her efforts towards Vision 2030,” he said. Dr Muswere added that Zanu PF is a robust institution with grassroots support, capable of overcoming opposition even if the constitutional amendment goes to a referendum. “We have massive grassroots support as Zanu PF, and with the collective resolution we have passed, it is a foregone conclusion – we have already won, regardless of whether we proceed to a referendum or plebiscite. We must dispel the misconception that amending the constitution is unconstitutional. Our Constitution has democratic processes in place for amendments,” he said. Dr Muswere noted that there were some party members, who participate in the Central Committee’s decision-making, and bypass internal remedies and platforms to discuss party issues in the media. “When a decision is made, they are part of it. When asked if anyone opposes it, they don’t raise objections. Instead, they want to discuss conference business in newspapers. We must be principled. If given the opportunity to express concerns, we should do so promptly,” he said. Dr Muswere assured victory, citing Zanu PF’s colossal presence and revolutionary capacity to drive national progress. He highlighted the President’s revolutionary economic empowerment programme, which recognises veterans’ contributions in line with the national and party constitutions. The minister also stated that President Mnangagwa’s issuance of title deeds marks the conclusion of the land reform programme. “No one will seize land from black owners, thanks to the President’s efforts to provide security of tenure and bankable documents.” This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Dr Muswere urged journalists not to provide a platform for reckless individuals who issue treasonous, inflammatory, and defamatory statements violating citizens’ rights. “Let’s respect each other, acknowledging everyone’s rights. We should support democratic discourse and adhere to constitutionalism.” – Herald _*Call for President’s term extension amplified following interdistrict meetings held in Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central provinces*_ CALLS for President Mnangagwa’s term of office to extend beyond 2028 continue to grow following interdistrict meetings held in Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central provinces yesterday. The interdistrict meetings saw party cadres implore the President to remain in office until 2030 to witness the successful fruition of Vision 2030. Party members also took time to castigate Cde Blessed “Bombshell” Geza whose life in Zanu PF hangs by a thread. Following his unwarranted claims and calls for President Mnangagwa to resign, the Zanu PF Mashonaland West Province leadership and party membership have recommended his expulsion from the party. In Mhondoro-Mubaira Constituency, Zanu PF party members drawn from the various wards of the area converged at Neuso Business Centre, where the meeting commended the development brought about by the Second Republic. “We have seen a lot of development that the Second Republic, under the astute leadership of President Mnangagwa, brought to our area. There has been massive infrastructure development in our area and we want the President to continue,” a party member attending the meeting said. Community members have also showered the President with praises for availing food assistance following the Cyclone Idai-induced drought. Mhondoro-Mubaira Member of Parliament Cde Simba Chiwanza said the President deserved a the term extension because the empowerment programmes his Government has been implementing have changed the lives of multitudes of people. He noted that through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF), his area was headed for massive infrastructure development. Zanu PF Women’s League provincial chairperson Cde Constance Shamu said President Mnangagwa had put in place empowerment programmes for women. Zanu PF provincial chairperson Cde Mary Mliswa-Chikoka said the calls for President Mnangagwa’s term extension were coming from the people. “The President has never requested that his term of office be extended. We the people, have made calls that he should be in office until 2030. This is not anywhere near third-term bidding as he is not interested in running for any more terms,” she said. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. In Mashonaland Central Province, the party leadership and membership said they remain steadfast on the province’s term extension stance because President Mnangagwa has earned it through his hard work. At a meeting in Bindura yesterday, Politburo member and Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Cde Monica Mavhunga, emphasised that this sentiment reflects the wishes of the masses. The meeting was called to give feedback from the National People’s Conference. Party leaders have been assigned the task of conveying this information to their respective communities. Cde Mavhunga assured participants at the meeting that there was nothing to fear in calling for the President’s term extension. “The Constitution can be amended; that is the duty of Parliament. While some claim President Mnangagwa is a constitutionalist—which is true—the voice of the people is the voice of God,” she said. “The majority believe that your transformative work as President makes it essential for you to complete what you started. If someone does not support Vision 2030, that is their own issue. We will adhere to the party resolutions,” she said. Cde Mavhunga spoke against individuals trying to create divisions within the party leadership, stating that the Presidium is united and party cadres should refrain from such tendencies. She encouraged respect for leaders and unity within the party. “Sometimes we assume that people know things when they don’t. The information must reach the grassroots level. I urge party members to read and understand the party constitution; this is essential for your growth within the party,” she said. “Our resolution as a party is that President Mnangagwa must continue until 2030 to fulfil his vision. The roadmap has been outlined in the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).” Zanu PF Mashonaland Central provincial vice chairperson, Cde Christopher Magomo, said yesterday’s meeting was the fifth of its a series of briefings the party has been holding as it aims to communicate outcomes from last year’s National People’s Conference across the districts. He noted that disgruntled, resigned, and frustrated individuals are spreading misinformation. “They want to create factions, but we reject this disharmony. We want all leaders here to convey the message that Zanu PF is united and strong,” he asserted. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. “We do not take orders from social media, the party has established proper structures. We know where to address our grievances, not on WhatsApp.” Cde Magomo indicated that anyone opposing the party’s resolution to extend the President’s term ceases to be a member, as the party constitution requires members to follow the rules and regulations. “Party members must strengthen, defend, popularise, and promote the party. Don’t stand by and watch as your country and President are insulted,” he said. “The President is working hard, and we have an obligation to support him in realising Vision 2030. Inform people back home about the truth, so they are not swayed. Zanu PF is a party for the masses and we want everyone on board.” Provincial youth chairperson Cde Emmerson Raradza said the youth will defend President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF. He said 2030 belongs to President Mnangagwa and no one should undermine his achievements. The boyfriend allegedly axed her to death at their lodgings in Mbizo 13 suburb on February 10 and is on the run. Last Thursday, Ms Matambo’s relatives dumped the body at the boyfriend’s house in Mbizo 15 but later collected the body and proceeded to Gutu where she was buried. We are Standard News Zimbabwe. The relatives said the temporary dumping of the body was meant to leave the avenging spirit of the deceased at the boyfriend’s place. The deceased’s uncle Mr Phillip Chidhakwa confirmed the incident. He said that they took the deceased’s body to the murder supect’s house to bid her spirit farewell before burial in Gutu as per their traditional custom. “Anna Matambo was my niece, my sister’s daughter. Chronicle _*Harare City Council Director Splashes US$8k On Family Holiday*_ Harare City Council’s housing director, Mr Addmore Nhekairo, took an US$8 000 trip to Zanzibar with his wife and three children, while service delivery is at an all-time low, with residents enduring years without potable running water. This lavish vacation comes at a time when the city is also struggling to procure basic necessities like toilet paper and pay junior workers’ salaries on time while the top brass is enjoying salaries of up to US$12 000 per month. The startling revelations came to light when Mr Nhekairo appeared before the Retired Justice Maphios Cheda-led commission. When asked by Justice Cheda if he had utilised his holiday perks for the past seven years he has been the housing director, Mr Nhekairo responded, “Once, Mr Chairman, with my wife, the one I am legally married to, and kids, I went to Zanzibar last year in December.” He further revealed that he had not gone on holiday for the other six years due to a lack of funds, but was given US$7,500 in arrears, with an annual allowance of US$2,500 that was later reduced to US$2 000. However, he revealed that he was still owed a holiday allowance for December, saying, “That’s what I’m still to receive, Chairman and it is about US$8 000 from the papers that I availed to finance.” This comes amid revelations that the City’s eight directors are each entitled to local, regional, and international holiday trips, with up to three children and spouses, all at the expense of ratepayers, despite the council’s cash-strapped situation. This includes visits to popular destinations such as Victoria Falls for local getaways, Mauritius for regional trips, and even luxurious Dubai for international vacations, with all expenses covered, including air tickets and accommodation at four star hotels. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. During the ongoing commission, Matthew Marara, the City’s assistant director to the town clerk , disclosed that he had received over US$27 000 in holiday allowances alone for the 30-months he was on suspension. Mr Marara said he was owed US$9 000 in local holiday allowances, calculated at US$3 000 per holiday for each of the three holidays he was entitled to from December 2020 to May 2023. In addition, he also claimed US$18 000 in regional holiday allowances, calculated at US$6 000 per holiday, for the same period. According to the latest evidence presented before the council, the City’s top brass can take up to five people, including themselves, on regional, local, and international trips, with economy flights and four-star hotel bookings reimbursed by the City Council upon presentation of receipts. On the sidelines of the summit, Mnangagwa formally introduced Dr. Samuel Maimbo, a Zambian national, as the joint candidate for the African Development Bank (AfDB) presidency, representing both the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Maimbo, a former World Bank executive, is vying to succeed outgoing AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina in elections scheduled for May. _*Zimsec opens registration for 2025 exams*_ The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has opened registration for the June and November 2025 Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations. State Media _*High court bars Kudzayi from ‘defaming’ Ken Sharpe*_ Local property developer Ken Sharpe has obtained an order barring an online publishing company from publishing "defamatory and derogatory content" against his firm, WestPro Holdings. The order, granted Friday by High Court judge, Justice Regis Dembure, prohibits Kukurigo Communications headed by Edmund Kudzai from publishing negative reports about the company. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. This came after the media house had published a series of stories deemed as damaging to the property developing company. "The respondents and all persons acting on their behalf be and are hereby interdicted and prohibited from publishing, producing, or disseminating any content that is defamatory or derogatory towards the applicants," the order reads. Last week, Nominate Chazwe, an employee at Kukurigo Communications, was arrested on allegations of extortion after threatening to blackmail Sharpe. Chazwe was placed on remand while his alleged accomplice, Kudzai, is alleged to be on the run. _*Maintain tight monetary policy, World Bank urges Zim*_ THE World Bank says Zimbabwe should maintain its tight monetary policy stance and resist spending pressures to keep the lid on inflation and ensure durable exchange rate stability. Inflation in Zimbabwe tracks the movement in the exchange rate, meaning stability in the domestic currency, which is influenced by the level of money supply in the economy, is one of the most critical factors to maintaining stability. According to the World Bank, there was a significant surge in money supply at the beginning of 2024, but the introduction of ZiG in April last year restored price stability. Zimbabwe experienced high inflation in the first quarter of 2024, amid significant expenditure on key infrastructure, rekindling fears the country would plunge into hyperinflation similar to what happened in 2008, which wiped out people’s hard-earned savings and pensions. The country is charting a completely new course, with low inflation and a stable exchange rate, which businesses say if sustained, could support long-term growth and allow greater predictability in the economy. Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu, have committed to tight fiscal and monetary policies to engender durable stability. Several measures have been instituted to support the fiscal and monetary policy positions, including demanding the payment of certain taxes and import duties in the local currency to create demand. “Maintain RBZ’s tight monetary policy stance and resist renewed (fiscal) pressures to ensure low inflation and exchange rate stability,” said the World Bank in an update on Zimbabwe’s economy last week. The Bretton Woods institution’s call comes after another influential multilateral lender, the IMF, said last week that Zimbabwe’s economy was recovering from the impact of the El Nino-induced drought, which weighed on growth last year. Zimbabwe’s economy, due to the impact of drought, grew by 2 percent last year, but is projected to expand by 6 percent this year following favourable rains received across the country. Agriculture is one of Zimbabwe’s key sectors, along with mining, tourism and manufacturing. The RBZ has committed to sticking to policies that promote price, currency and exchange rate stability by maintaining a tight monetary policy stance with the overarching objective to foster central bank policy consistency and credibility. State Media _*Malema says he will not be bullied by Elon Musk, Trump*_ EFF leader Julius Malema ,who visited the St. Paul’s Apostolic African Church in Soweto on Sunday, urged the church to help in the fight against landlessness. Addressing a packed congregation, at the church’s thanksgiving feast, Malema talked tough on the issue of land and transformation and did not shy away from the recent stand off between South Africa and the US, following president Donald Trump’s recent executive order cutting key funding from South Africa. Trump said Afrikaners were being targeted by a new law that allows the government to expropriate private land. Malema who also spoke about crime, GBV and substance abuse currently prevalent in society said he will not be bullied by Elon Musk, who labelled Malema an "international criminal" on social media and Donald Trump. Musk’s statement was in reference to a 2018 social media post in which Malema declared, "We will cut the throat of whiteness”. Malema in the post made the statement as he advocated for the removal of Athol Trollip, who was the mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay at the time. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Malema said attacks by Musk will not deter him from his political work and commitment to his principles. “We want the land and next time they ask me what I want to do with the land, I will say I want to do what my pastor has done with the land. You can be guaranteed South Africans, I will not be bullied by Elon Musk and Donald Trump because, I have never done any crime against anyone,” he stated. Malema delivered his address in front of the packed Soweto church on the invite of former Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesperson, Sello Hatang, who is a member of the church. Malema who this weekend attended an auction with white farmers, indicated that he did this deliberately to illustrate to Trump and Musk that he does not harbour any ill will against white farmers, adding that being called an international criminal does not bother him. “I am so happy to be an international criminal because, Nelson Mandela was an international criminal. That is what they declared him for fighting for the freedom of our people. If it means I am joining the ranks of Mandela, so be it,..I am a proud international criminal” he declared “Today, I have been asked to speak on the challenges facing our society, which include the crime that confronts our communities which is partnered by the abuse of drugs and alcohol as well as to speak on the challenges of unemployment and landlessness. “We call upon the church to join the EFF on the call to ban the advertisement of alcohol because this advertisement of alcohol, makes it look cool, when in fact, it is the devil in our country,” he stated. Early this month, during a media briefing, Malema declared that 2025 would be the "year of the picket lines”, in a bid to return the party to its grassroots activism. Malema asked the same of the church saying in the past, the church fought side by side with many of the country’s liberation movements and it should renew its commitment to socio-economic issues as the voice of the church is still needed in the country. The 55-year-old rapper and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs had been accused by an unnamed woman of drugging and raping her at an after-party for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City when she was a teenager but the lawsuit was dismissed a few days ago, and the '99 Problems' hitmaker is suing his anonymous accuser's attorney, Tony Buzbee, for emotional distress. In a declaration filed in Los Angeles and obtained by People magazine, Jay – who has daughter Blue Ivy, 13, and twins Rumi and Sir, seven, with wife Beyonce – alleged he had lost $20 million in contracts since the lawsuit was filed in October 2024. And he accused the lawyer of purposely inflicting emotional distress by deliberately filing the complaint the evening before his daughter's movie premiere for 'Mufasa: The Lion King' to "put me in the position of having to choose between supporting my daughter or hiding to avoid the negative press." He added: "I felt that Mr. Buzbee was placing a gun to my head that I either bow to his demands or endure personal and financial ruin." _*US man sues travel company after hippo kills wife on Zambia trip*_ A New Jersey man whose wife was killed in a horrific hippopotamus attack last year during a safari in Africa is suing the U.S. company that arranged the trip, alleging it failed to ensure their safety and did not adequately screen and supervise the tour guides. Craig and Lisa Manders were on a guided walk in Zambia in June when a hippo charged out of the water, grabbed Lisa Manders by its mouth and crushed her head and body with its bite, according to the lawsuit filed against African Portfolio, a safari tour company based in Greenwich, Connecticut. The company denies the lawsuit's allegations. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. The lawsuit, filed Feb. 5 in Stamford, Connecticut, alleges that as a horrified Craig Manders watched the attack, the tour guides — including at least one armed with a rifle — walked away without helping the couple. Lisa Manders, 70, suffered catastrophic injuries and died shortly after, the lawsuit says. "We're doing this because this should never have happened," said Paul Slager, an attorney who is representing Craig Manders with his law partner, Nicole Coates. "There are basic safety standards that businesses are expected to follow, and that includes people in the safari tour industry. And those were not followed, and the consequences here were absolutely devastating." Slager said the lawsuit seeks monetary damages that have not yet been determined, as well as accountability for Lisa Manders' death and keeping others safe in the future. He said Craig Manders was not giving interviews. The Manderses, of Cranford, New Jersey, were on a special anniversary trip and it was their first time in Africa, Slager said. Lisa Manders had worked in the financial industry for over 40 years and loved cooking, traveling and visiting New York City, where she was born in Queens in 1953, according to her obituary. The couple had three children and a granddaughter. The company's lawyer, Rodney Gould, said it was not negligent or reckless in connection with Lisa Manders' death. He said African Portfolio only arranged the couple's lodging and the owners of the lodging, Chiawa Safaris in Zambia, provided the tour guides. "It's a horrible tragedy when somebody goes on one of these trips and is injured or killed. It's awful," Gould said. "I think it's important to understand what African Portfolio's role in this is. It's a tour operator. It arranges trips. It puts together the pieces." He added, "My client didn't conduct the safari. It arranged it. It booked all the components." Gould also said the company was not negligent in vetting Chiawa, because it has an excellent reputation. He said African Portfolio will either ask a judge to dismiss the lawsuit or request that the matter go to arbitration, which was a condition of an agreement the Manderses signed for the trip. In a statement, African Portfolio did not directly address the lawsuit. It said Chiawa arranged the walking safari and guests were accompanied by an experienced and highly trained guide, a ranger and an armed National Park scout. It said Chiawa told authorities that safety measures were implemented before the attack and "repeated warnings" were issued to guests to return to the safety of the vehicle "during the incident." This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Asked whether the guests were warned about the hippo before the attack, African Portfolio said in an email only that "the statement is an accurate reflection of the events as we understand them." Gould declined to comment. The company also said its founder flew to Zambia immediately after the attack and joined Chiawa's owner in ensuring that "everything possible was being done to support the family and all those involved. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family, and everyone else involved in this tragic incident." The lawsuit, which does not mention Chiawa, says African safaris are "inherently dangerous activities" because of the unpredictability and sometime aggressive nature of wild animals, and they require careful planning and execution to be completed safely. It says African Portfolio vetted and oversaw the tour guides and vouched that they were competent, qualified and trained to keep people safe. The suit alleges that African Portfolio "encouraged and/or permitted" the Manderses to be exposed to an "avoidable and highly dangerous encounter with a dangerous hippopotamus in the Zambian wilderness." It also accuses the company of failing to provide safe conditions during the wilderness walk and failing to ensure that the tour guides were adequately selected, screened, supervised and trained to provide a safe experience. African Portfolio also failed to take adequate steps to protect the Manderses before and during the attack, the suit alleges. Hippos are the world's second-largest land mammals after elephants, measuring about 3.5 meters long and about 1.5 meters tall, according to International Fund for Animal Welfare. The average male hippo weighs about 3,200 kilograms. Hippos are known to be territorial and aggressive at times. A year before Lisa Manders died, seven people were killed in the southern African nation of Malawi when a hippo charged into a canoe and capsized it on a river. Estimates of how many people are killed by hippos each year vary, with lower figures beginning at around 500. Lisa Manders suffered "significant premorbid fear and emotional pain, suffering and mental anguish" before her death, the suit says. Craig Manders suffered severe and debilitating emotional and psychological injuries that have made it difficult for him to cope with daily routines, it says. The lawsuit is seeking damages on allegations of negligence and recklessness. "He's suing both for the loss of his wife and the impact that has on him and his life," Slager said. "And he also has a claim for having witnessed what happened to her, having seen the attack, which is unthinkable. It's unimaginable." _*Russian Tourists Stranded in Poland After Emergency Landing, Pasenngers Blocked from Disembarking, 10 Hours Without Food and Water*_ Poznań, Poland – Over 200 Russian tourists, including pregnant women and children, have been left stranded at Poznań-Ławica Airport for more than ten hours after their flight was forced to make an emergency landing due to severe weather conditions. The AlMasria Airlines Flight UJ681, travelling from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to Kaliningrad, Russia, was unable to land at its intended destination due to a snowstorm and was granted permission to land in Poland. However, Polish authorities have reportedly refused to allow passengers to disembark, provide refuelling, or grant clearance for the aircraft to continue its journey. According to reports, the 236 passengers on board have been left without food, water, or access to toilet facilities as they wait for permission to take off. Frustration and concern are mounting as travellers, including vulnerable individuals, endure increasingly dire conditions. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. The situation has sparked diplomatic concerns, with calls for urgent intervention to resolve the standoff. It remains unclear whether Polish authorities will provide the necessary assistance to facilitate the flight’s continuation. _*DR Congo says rebels occupy 2nd major city in its mineral-rich east*_ BUKAVU, DRC — Rebels have “occupied” a second major city in mineral-rich eastern Congo, the government said Sunday, as M23 rebels positioned themselves at the governor's office in Bukavu and pledged to clean up after the “old regime.” Associated Press journalists witnessed scores of residents cheering on the rebels after they entered Bukavu following a dayslong march from Goma, a city of 2 million people they seized last month. The rebels saw little resistance from government forces against the unprecedented expansion of their reach after their years of fighting. Congo's government vowed to restore order in Bukavu, a city of 1.3 million people, but there was no sign of soldiers. Many were seen fleeing on Saturday alongside thousands of civilians. The M23 are the most prominent of more than 100 armed groups vying for control of eastern Congo’s trillions of dollars in mineral wealth that's critical for much of the world's technology. The rebels are supported by about 4,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda, according to United Nations experts. _*World’s first openly gay Islamic priest shot dead in South Africa*_ CAPE TOWN, South Africa – Muhsin Hendricks, a pioneering figure dubbed the world’s first openly gay imam, has been shot dead in South Africa. The 57-year-old cleric ran a mosque in Cape Town intended as a safe haven for gay and other marginalised Muslims. He was killed on Saturday morning after the car in which he was travelling near the southern city of Gqeberha was ambushed. “Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle,” police said in a statement. News of Hendricks’ death has sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the globe. *STANDARD SPORT* _*Liverpool continues Premier League title charge and Man United’s season keeps getting worse*_ Liverpool continued its charge toward the Premier League title on Sunday with a 2-1 win against Wolverhampton. For Manchester United, it just keeps getting worse after a 1-0 loss at Tottenham. The fortunes of England’s two most successful teams could hardly be more contrasting. Victory for Liverpool saw the club restore its seven-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table and move ever closer to equaling Man United’s record haul of 20 league crowns. United, meanwhile, lost for the 12th time in the league this season and is 15th in the standings after James Maddison’s first-half strike for Spurs. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. It is turning out to be another miserable campaign for the club that dominated English soccer under former manager Alex Ferguson. That is a distant memory now, with United’s wait to end its title drought set to extend to 12 years this season. United has not been champion since Ferguson’s final campaign in 2013. Ruben Amorim is the sixth permanent coach since then to be charged with the responsibility of restoring its supremacy, but his early tenure has been fraught with problems. “I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst,” Amorim said. “I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident on my work and I just want to win games. The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me.” Clash of clubs in crisis This was Amorim’s ninth defeat in 21 games in all competitions since taking over in November. He has only overseen four league wins in that time. He already claimed in January that this could be the worst United team in the club’s storied history and there is little sign of improvement. Against a Spurs team that is also struggling in the wrong half of the table, Maddison’s goal in the 13th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was enough to settle this clash of clubs in crisis. Some Tottenham fans are so dismayed by the state of their club that they staged a pre-match protest against chairman Daniel Levy. But this was the third time their team had beaten United this season. There could yet be a fourth encounter if both teams continue to advance in the Europa League. But the Premier League is Amorim’s primary concern right now — even if a relegation fight remains unlikely. Despite being just three places above the drop zone, United is 12 points above the safety line. That is little to shout about with United eight points off the top half. Nervous Liverpool Liverpool had to withstand a fightback from Wolves, which included a brilliant long-range goal from Matheus Cunha. First-half strikes from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah secured the win for Arne Slot’s team, but an unconvincing performance after the break saw the home team fail to register a single shot on target as Wolves dominated the chances. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. “Obviously 2-0 at halftime, we know that can be one of the most dangerous results in football. We had to come out and we had to start well – and we didn’t quite do that,” said Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson. “When they scored, everyone gets nervous. The players get nervous, the crowd get nervous – of course that’s only natural. But it’s a massive win for us and another game down.” Diaz bundled the ball over the line from close range in the 15th minute to give Liverpool the lead. And Salah doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 37th after Diaz was brought down. It was the Egypt international’s 28th goal of an outstanding season and extended his current scoring streak to six straight games. But if the home crowd was expecting a routine victory against 17th-placed Wolves, it was anything but. Liverpool conceded a goal in stoppage time to draw 2-2 with Everton on Wednesday and was pushed again. Cunha’s drag-back and curled finish from around 20 yards (meters) in the 67th came after a sustained period of pressure from the visitors. Before that Marshall Munetsi was denied when through on goal — it took a crucial block in front of goal from Jarell Quansah to prevent him from converting late on. “In a season where you want to achieve something, you need to have wins like this as well,” Slot said. Injury crisis United named eight teenagers on the bench who had never played a senior game for the club following an injury crisis at Old Trafford. Amad Diallo is likely to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury and Lisandro Martinez has already been ruled out with cruciate ligament damage Amorim was also without Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer through injury or illness at Spurs. It meant the United coach waited until the first minute of time added on to make a substitution — replacing Casemiro for debutant Chido Obi. Fans protest Tottenham fans protested outside the stadium before kickoff, calling for chairman Daniel Levy and owner ENIC to go. Giant banners read “Profits before glory” and “We want our club back” as supporters let their feelings be known. The protest was organized by a fans’ group called “Change for Tottenham”. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Tottenham’s last trophy was the English League Cup in 2008. _*Man United's lack of options leaves Amorim scrambling in 1 nil loss to Spurs*_ There was a time when Manchester United chancing their luck on a rookie striker would create a moment of folklore. Most famously, think Federico Macheda against Aston Villa in 2009. Or Danny Welbeck against Stoke City two years earlier. And then there was Marcus Rashford's stunning full Premier League debut against Arsenal in 2016, scoring twice to offset an injury crisis under Louis van Gaal. But as Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Tottenham ticked into stoppage time, Ruben Amorim opted to throw on 17-year-old Chido Obi-Martin for his senior debut. A highly rated forward, devastatingly prolific at youth level and prized from Arsenal's academy in what is regarded as a considerable coup, Obi-Martin did not touch the ball. Instead of an entry into folklore, this was a cry for help. Amorim's options were reduced further by injuries to Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo -- the latter is now set to miss the rest of the season. They were missing 12 players in total through injury or illness, but it was nevertheless a truly remarkable sight to witness a club of United's stature name a bench comprising eight teenagers and defender Victor Lindelöf. Seven of those teenagers were born after the Glazer family took control of United in 2005. None of them had ever played in the Premier League. It was in essence a strange decision by Amorim to introduce Obi-Martin at that point. Surely, if he's ready, he gets 20 minutes or so to make his presence felt -- a gambler's punt of the kind Sir Alex Ferguson routinely made. Or if he's not ready, why expose him to this situation at all? This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. United made something of a fight in the second half, thanks to James Maddison's 13th-minute opener, but their attempts to rally were encouraged more than they should have been by an alarmingly fragile Tottenham team who made five substitutions of their own -- largely like-for-like changes rather than closing the game down. Amorim's sole change spoke volumes. Alejandro Garnacho tried his best, Joshua Zirkzee showed some silky touches that were too far from goal, while Rasmus Højlund resembled a tracing of an elite center-forward rather than the real thing. The combination meant United could only jab without ever landing a firm blow. The Obi-Martin substitution was one last swing, too little too late. "If you see Chido playing sometimes, every ball lost in the box, he is very clever," explained Amorim. "So I was trying to put one more player because I felt the team was good during the game, I didn't feel the need to change. Chido was like that player, one long ball he could make the difference. It is the hardest competition in the world. I am trying to be careful with the [young players]." _*Michallik: Ruben Amorim has delivered 'absolutely nothing' at Man Utd*_ Details to follow… _*Man United's Ruben Amorim 'not worried' about job security as pressure mounts*_ Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he is not worried about the safety his job despite the team slumping to a 12th Premier League defeat of the season at Tottenham Hotspur and languishing in 15th. James Maddison's first-half rebound proved enough for Spurs to overcome United 1-0 in what was a tight affair between two injury-affected teams in London. This is a Standard News Zimbabwe news production. Amorim has now lost eight of his 14 league games since replacing Erik ten Hag at the helm, but said he is more worried by being in the bottom half of the table than potentially losing the role. "I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it," he said to the BBC. "I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst. "The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident in my work and I just want to win games. "The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me." The Portuguese coach went on to bemoan the small margins that decided the game, with Alejandro Garnacho particularly guilty of spurning a gilt-edged opportunity to restore parity before the half-time whistle. "It was the difference of the game, they scored and we didn't," he said. "We had the opportunities. We had situations in transitions, trying to get a result, but in the end they scored and we didn't." United were dealt a body blow this weekend as Amad Diallo was ruled out for "likely" the rest of the season with an ankle ligament injury sustained in training. Amorim's dearth of choice was made clear by his bench on Sunday, with Victor Lindelöf the only established first-team player among a pool of untested teenagers. _*Antony nets stunner as hot Real Betis loan form continues*_ On loan Manchester United winger Antony scored for the third consecutive game to continue his excellent start to life in Spain as Real Betis beat nine-man Real Sociedad 3-0 on Sunday. The 24-year-old followed up strikes against Celta Vigo and Gent with a brilliant volley from just inside the box to open the scoring against La Real at the Benito Villamarín. Antony then set up Marc Roca for the third goal as Betis coasted to a victory which helped them climb to eighth in LaLiga. He had earlier won a penalty, too, which was missed by Giovani Lo Celso. _*Newcastle could sell Isak for £83m*_ Newcastle would be willing to let Alexander Isak leave for £83.3m (100m euros) this summer if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, with Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea among those keen on the 25-year-old Sweden striker Standard News Zimbabwe sports tit bits: *Atletico Madrid are interested in Leicester's 28-year-old Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi* *Chelsea have been closely monitoring Middlesbrough's 16-year-old twins Anton and Bailey Palmer, with Tottenham, Aston Villa and Brighton also interested in the England Under-17 midfielders* *Real Madrid are considering trying to quit Spanish football for another league in protest at the leadership of La Liga president Javier Tebas and what they perceive as biased refereeing decisions* This is a Zimbabwe news Hub production.
