St. John de Britto, a Portuguese Jesuit and noble friend of King Pedro, became a missionary in India. Adopting Brahmin customs to help with conversions, his ministry was in Goa and Malabar. Arrested and tortured for his faith, he refused to leave India and was martyred in 1693. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947.
