Gonsalo Garcia, the first Indian saint, was born in Vasai, formerly Bassein. He, along with other Franciscans, worked with great missionary zeal in Japan. They were crucified on suspicion of sedition, through rumors circulated by their enemies. Gonsalo Garcia is the patron saint of the diocese of Vasai and the second patron of the Archdiocese of Bombay.
