"Bagheera" in Bengal? A rare black panther has been spotted gracefully roaming the forests of Kurseong, North Bengal! Captured on camera by IFS officer Parveen Kaswan, this breathtaking sight left wildlife lovers in awe. Kaswan shared the video on X, writing “Bagheera of Kurseong. What a beauty.” And he’s right—this majestic melanistic leopard is a rare spectacle! In a follow-up post, he explained that black panthers aren’t a separate species but a melanistic variant of leopards (Panthera pardus). Their dark coat is caused by excess pigmentation, but their signature rosette patterns can still be seen under certain lighting! These elusive predators are mostly found in dense forests of Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, and parts of Northeast India — making this North Bengal sighting even more special! Nature’s wonders never cease to amaze. Let’s pledge to protect and cherish them!
