Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is back on the big screen in India, giving fans a chance to relive its breathtaking visuals and mind-bending storytelling. But did you know that an Indian artist played a key role in its Oscar-winning VFX?
Kochi-based Rahul Venugopal was a digital compositor at Double Negative VFX, London, where he worked as part of the 500-member team that brought Interstellar’s visuals to life.
Unlike most sci-fi films that rely heavily on CGI and green screens, Nolan took a different approach. “Most of the shots were done practically on set without the use of greenscreens, which need further cleanup in post-production,” shares Rahul.
This made the project both uniquely challenging and incredibly rewarding for VFX artists like him.
Rahul’s journey in visual effects began in Chennai, where he studied media technology before moving to Singapore to train in VFX. His career took off with Indian films like Badrinath and Yezham Arivu, and he even worked on Eega as a second on-set supervisor. But in early 2014, he landed his biggest opportunity yet — working on Interstellar!
Today, Rahul’s work spans Singapore, India, Bulgaria, Turkey, China, and the UK, making him a true global talent. His story is a testament to how Indian artists are leaving their mark on Hollywood’s biggest films!
