It was on this day in 1858 that a 14 year old girl, Bernadette Soubirous was wading with her sister through the water near the Grotto of Massabielle when she saw a beautiful lady, dressed in white with a blue girdle and yellow roses on her feet, holding a rosary. It was the first of several such apparitions, which were gradually revealed to be of the Immaculate Conception, inviting prayer and penance, pilgrimage and devotion, and offering healing to many sick people ever since. Lourdes tells by its miracles and the testimonies what our Church never tires of teaching: the dignity of every human person, however reduced, including the sick and suffering, the disabled and dying.
