🌍Since 2015, February 10 has been celebrated as World Epilepsy Day, an event that aims to educate people around the world about this neurological pathology that affects approximately 65 million people worldwide.🙏💐
The goal of today's highlight is to promote a better quality of life for people with epilepsy.
Diagnosis, causes and treatment of epilepsy
To diagnose epilepsy, healthcare professionals evaluate the symptoms and medical history of patients who have had seizures. In addition, they must perform various studies to evaluate the cause of the seizures by performing neurological examinations, blood tests, electroencephalogram (EEG), MRI, CT scans and neuropsychological tests.
Causes
The causes that cause this disease are unknown in 50% of cases worldwide. The World Health Organization divides the causes of this condition into genetic, infectious, metabolic, immunological and unknown, among which the following stand out:
• Brain damage caused by prenatal or perinatal injuries (
• Congenital malformations or genetic alterations associated with brain malformations
• Severe head injury
• Cerebrovascular disorders that limit the supply of oxygen to the brain
• Brain infections such as meningitis and encephalitis or neurocysticercosis
• Some genetic syndromes
• Brain tumors
Early detection of this disease is essential so that the patient can start treatment as soon as possible.
Currently, there are several anticonvulsant drugs that regulate the frequency of seizures. Another treatment option is surgery, but it is only used when patients are candidates for intervention.
