The Italian Army has ordered 48 Leonardo AW249 attack helicopters to replace its Agusta A129 Mangusta helicopters. The AW249, dubbed Fenice (Phoenix) in English, is being developed by Leonardo to be larger, more survivable, and more autonomous than its predecessor. It will incorporate stealth technology and mission systems to control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.
