*Burning🔥 of Widows🤦‍♀️: A Practice of Patriarchal😕 Oppression in India🇮🇳* This practice, known as Sati or Suttee, was seen as a means for women💁‍♀️ to escape their difficult fate, as widows🙍‍♀️ were viewed as a burden. They were always treated unfairly😑 by their in-laws, who used to prevent⛔ widows from inheriting their husband's👨‍🦳 property🏠. Since widows🙎‍♀️ were often treated as if they were less📉 important than their husbands👳‍♂️, they were expected to show their love🥰 and respect🫶 by sacrificing themselves, often by being burned🔥 alive🙆‍♀️, *_in most cases forcibly._* Sati was also seen as a way for women🙍‍♀️ to fulfill their dharma (duty) towards their husbands and families👨‍👩‍👦‍👦. The practice was later banned by the British🇻🇬 colonial government👩‍💼 in 1829, and it has remained prohibited by law👨🏻‍⚖.
