Allah says in surah al-Shura [42]: [وَلَوْ بَسَطَ اللَّهُ الرِّزْقَ لِعِبَادِهِ لَبَغَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَٰكِن يُنَزِّلُ بِقَدَرٍ مَّا يَشَاءُ] _And if Allah had extended provisions to His servants they would have transgressed in the land, but He sends down whatever He wishes in a measured manner_. [27] Commenting on this, al-Qurtubi wrote: [وقال ابن عباس : بغيهم طلبهم منزلة بعد منزلة ودابة بعد دابة ومركبا بعد مركب وملبسا بعد ملبس . وقيل : أراد لو أعطاهم الكثير لطلبوا ما هو أكثر منه ، لقوله : ( لو كان لابن آدم واديان من ذهب لابتغى إليهما ثالثا ) وهذا هو البغي ، وهو معنى قول ابن عباس] ibn 'Abbaas said: Their transgressing is seeking one house after another, and one livestock animal after another, and one riding animal after another, and one outfit after another. And some said the meaning here is: if He had given them a lot, they would have wanted something even more than that. That relates to the Prophet's statement, "If the son of Adam was given two valleys of gold, he would long for a third one to have alongside those two." This is the *baghi* - "transgression" - and that is what ibn 'Abbaas was describing.
