Allah criticizes Banu Israa'eel in surah al-Ma'idah by saying: [وَحَسِبُوا أَلَّا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ فَعَمُوا وَصَمُّوا ثُمَّ تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ عَمُوا وَصَمُّوا كَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ] _They thought that there would be no trial so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness, and then many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah sees what they do_. [71] Commenting on this, al-Tabari wrote: [حدثنا بشر قال ، حدثنا يزيد قال ، حدثنا سعيد ، عن قتادة قوله : " وحسبوا ألا تكون فتنة " ، الآية ، يقول : حسب القوم أن لا يكون بلاء "فعموا وصموا " ، كلما عرض بلاء ابتلوا به ، هلكوا فيه . ] Qatadah said: "They thought that there would be no trial" - i.e. people thought that there would be no test "so they became blind and deaf" - every time a test was presented to them, they failed it.
