Allah says in surah al-Ma'idah: [وَحَسِبُوا أَلَّا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ فَعَمُوا وَصَمُّوا ثُمَّ تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ عَمُوا وَصَمُّوا كَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ] _They thought that there would be no trial so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness, and then many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah sees what they do_. [71] Commenting on this, al-Sa'di wrote: [{ وَحَسِبُوا أَلَّا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ ْ} أي: ظنوا أن معصيتهم وتكذيبهم لا يجر عليهم عذابا ولا عقوبة، فاستمروا على باطلهم] "They thought that there would be no trial" - i.e. they thought that their sins and denial would not result in any punishment or negative consequences for them so they persisted in their falsehood.
