Allah says in surah al-Ma'idah: [مَّا الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ وَأُمُّهُ صِدِّيقَةٌ] _The Messiah the son of Maryam is only a Messenger - other messengers have passed on before him - and his mother is only a *siddiqah*._ [75] Commenting on this, al-Sa'di wrote: [وهذا دليل على أن مريم لم تكن نبية، بل أعلى أحوالها الصديقية، وكفى بذلك فضلا وشرفا. وكذلك سائر النساء لم يكن منهن نبية، لأن الله تعالى جعل النبوة في أكمل الصنفين، في الرجال كما قال تعالى: { وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًا نُّوحِي إِلَيْهِمْ ْ}] This is proof that Maryam was not a prophetess. In reality, her highest station was a *siddiqah* - a truthful one -, and that is enough of virtue and honour! The same applies to all other women, none of whom were prophetesses. That is because Allah placed prophethood in the more complete of the two genders, in the men, as He said: [وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًا نُّوحِي إِلَيْهِم] " _And before you, We only sent men to whom We had given revelation to_ ..."
