*Trump signs new order cutting support to South Africa over land, Israel*
Donald Trump has just signed an executive order cutting financial assistance to South Africa, citing land laws and South Africa’s case against Israel:
A summary of the order:
* South Africa is “seizing ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property” and is “fueling disproportionate violence against racially disfavored landowners”
* Trump is also punishing South Africa for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice over its war on Palestine. Trump’s order says South Africa has taken “aggressive positions towards the United States and its allies, including accusing Israel, not Hamas, of genocide in the International Court of Justice”
* The US is also punishing SA for “reinvigorating its relations with Iran”, which it says is “undermining United States foreign policy, which poses national security threats to our Nation”.
* The US has pledged to take in Afrikaners who it says are “refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination”.
The United States committed nearly $440 million in assistance to South Africa in 2023. US assistance supports 17% of SA’s HIV/AIDS programmes.
South African businesses worry that the US may follow up with trade measures against South Africa. Under AGOA, which gives special trade access for some African countries, South Africa exports a range of goods.
The biggest export under AGOA are cars, woth $1.5 billion per year. Two thirds of SA’s agric exports to the US are under AGOA
