Paul Bunyan is a highly important figure in American folklore, originating from the northern states, presumably Michigan. According to oral tradition, he was born in the early 19th century, but it's only in the last century that his legend has grown, assuming its current role. Paul Bunyan is a gigantic human, with dimensions varying from three meters tall to towering over mountains. He's the classic lumberjack, dressed in a plaid flannel shirt, heavy pants with suspenders, and oversized tools, including an axe capable of felling entire forests with a single swing. This famous lumberjack represents the American people's attempt to create their own mythology and, specifically, a benevolent hero with superhuman strength. There are countless stories featuring Paul Bunyan, including the famous anecdote about his birth. Due to his massive size, the newborn Paul was delivered to his parents by five enormous storks, who arrived exhausted. His first crib was a carriage made from tree trunks, pulled by three horses. He drank the milk of 24 cows daily and ate the equivalent of 10 barrels of porridge every evening. Paul is often accompanied by a blue ox named Babe. During a snowstorm, Paul found a struggling calf buried under meters of snow, and the two became inseparable. Together, they'll be the protagonists of numerous stories, practically shaping the geography of the United States. Apparently, the Mississippi River was created by water flowing from a hole in Babe's watering trough, and during a playful fight between the two, the earth they displaced created the Grand Canyon. Paul Bunyan's importance in American culture is evident in the numerous enormous statues found in almost every state, and there's even a national Paul Bunyan Day celebrated on June 28.
