Masvingo Leads in Inland Water Bodies with Tugwi-Mukosi Driving Development
By Tafara Pande 🇿🇼
Masvingo Province has been rated the leading region in Zimbabwe in terms of inland water bodies, with Tugwi-Mukosi Dam standing out as the largest in the province. This strategic water body is set to play a crucial role in the province's economic transformation, contributing significantly towards achieving an $8 billion economy by 2030.
A recent study conducted by local engineers has revealed that Tugwi-Mukosi Dam has the potential to host a 15-megawatt hydroelectric power station. Once operational, this power plant will alleviate power shortages and reduce load shedding, a move that will boost industrial production, enhance trade, and stimulate economic growth. Reliable electricity supply will attract more investors and empower businesses, reinforcing Masvingo’s role in the national economy.
Tugwi-Mukosi is more than just a water reservoir—it is a multipurpose infrastructure with vast potential across various economic sectors, including tourism expansion, and the dam is set to become a major tourism attraction, with plans underway to introduce boat cruising and other water-based activities. This will position Masvingo as a leading tourism hub, creating employment and boosting local businesses.
Irrigation farming will be a top priority, with vast tracts of land around the dam set to be utilized for commercial and subsistence farming. This will improve food security, create jobs, and boost exports, aligning with the Second Republic’s goal of eradicating hunger at the household level.
Fishing is another key sector expected to thrive, with local communities already receiving training in modern fishing techniques. The fishing industry will not only provide food but also create employment and business opportunities, empowering rural communities.
The success of Tugwi-Mukosi’s development plan hinges on public-private partnerships (PPPs). The government has welcomed private sector participation, recognizing its pivotal role in funding and implementing large-scale projects. By fostering collaboration between the government, private investors, and local communities, Masvingo will accelerate economic growth and development.
Guided by President Mnangagwa’s mantra, “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo” (A country is built by its own people), the local community is eager to contribute to national development. Rural industrialization remains a top priority of the Second Republic, ensuring that no one and no place is left behind. The integration of villagers into the economic activities around Tugwi-Mukosi will empower communities and drive sustainable development.
With its vast water resources, renewable energy potential, agricultural prospects, and tourism appeal, Masvingo Province is well on track to contribute significantly to Zimbabwe’s $8 billion economy target by 2030. The Tugwi-Mukosi project is a symbol of progress, proving that through strategic investments and inclusive participation, Zimbabwe’s vision for economic prosperity is achievable.
