Only that it manifests mostly in the men’s version. There, we have had stories of siblings playing against each other. The Boateng brothers, Jerome and Kevin-Prince are probably the most famous because of their confrontation at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Jerome played for Germany while KP played for Ghana when the two nations clashed in what remains the only World Cup match featuring brothers on opposite sides. Women’s football is inching closer to such a scenario, but for now, we have siblings rivalling off-field. Enter Sebastian Derera. One has to sympathise with him, because he will most likely be emotionally undecided on who to support when Black Rhinos Queens play Norton-based Maningi Queens in the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) this season. Because each side will have a fruit of his loins. Black Rhinos Queens recently announced Brian Derera as head coach, replacing Kuda Matuwi who has been moved to the men’s team. Derera was at Cranbourne Royals last season, leading them to the regional championship and, with it, promotion to the ZWPSL. When Rhinos take on Maningi, the Derera name will appear on both benches, because Tiamike Derera is the Safeguarding Officer at Maningi. The journalist also handles media duties at the club, doubling that with a similar role for the ZWPSL. Was she inspired into these streets by her coach brother? In a chat with The Norton Times, she said what she grew up admiring most about her brother was not his coaching. “I admired and got inspiration from the military uniform. The shining boots!”, said the former basketball player.
