﷽ Allāh says in surah al-Nisa': [وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا] And when you are greeted with a greeting, then respond with a better greeting or return it. [86] In his tafsir of this ayah, al-Tabari mentioned the following reports: [ 10033 - حدثني محمد بن الحسين قال : حدثنا أحمد بن مفضل قال : حدثنا أسباط ، عن السدي : وإذا حييتم بتحية فحيوا بأحسن منها أو ردوها : يقول : إذا سلم عليك أحد فقل أنت : " وعليك السلام ورحمة الله " ، أو تقطع إلى " السلام عليك " كما قال لك . ... 10040 - حدثنا محمد بن بشار قال : حدثنا سالم بن نوح قال : حدثنا سعيد بن أبي عروبة ، عن قتادة في قوله : وإذا حييتم بتحية فحيوا بأحسن منها : للمسلمين " أو ردوها " على أهل الكتاب . ] al-Suddi said: When someone gives salam to you, then you should say, "wa 'alaikum al-salam wa rahmatullaah" or stop at, "al-salam 'alaikum" just as they said to you. Qatadah said: "And when you are greeted with a greeting, then respond with a better greeting" - that is for the Muslims - "or return it" - that is for the People of the Book.
