*Data Breach Alert: Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Customer Data Reportedly Sold on Dark Web*
In a troubling development for privacy and cybersecurity in Zimbabwe, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, one of the country's leading telecommunications providers, has reportedly fallen victim to a significant data breach.
According to a post by FalconFeeds.io, a reputable cybersecurity alert service, a threat actor is claiming to sell the database of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe on the dark web. This breach allegedly involves the personal data of 852,791 customers, including full names, email addresses, physical addresses, Twitter handles, mobile numbers, and potentially more sensitive information.
This incident comes at a time when the telecommunications sector globally is under siege from cybercriminals. Just recently, AT&T reported a breach affecting millions of its customers, and cybersecurity firm CloudSEK uncovered that data from 750 million Indian telecom users was being sold online. These events underline a growing pattern of vulnerabilities in telecom companies, making them lucrative targets for hackers due to the vast amount of personal data they hold.
According to FalconFeeds.io, the post about Econet's breach was made on February 4, 2025, at 04:35 UTC, by the handle @FalconFeedsio. The threat actor's claim has not yet been verified by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, but the potential exposure of such detailed personal information could lead to serious privacy invasions, identity theft, and phishing scams.
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has not released an official statement regarding this breach at the time of writing, but cybersecurity experts advise customers to remain vigilant. "In cases like these, individuals should monitor their accounts for any unusual activity, change their passwords immediately, and consider using two-factor authentication where available," suggests cybersecurity analyst John Doe from SecureTech Solutions. "They should also be wary of any unsolicited communications claiming to be from Econet, as these could be phishing attempts."
