*DRAKENSTEIN MUNICIPALITY: RENTING OF STATE PROVIDED HOMES IS TRAVESTY* *GOOD* Statement by *Doreen Carolissen* , *GOOD* Drakenstein Councillor 04 February 2025 The GOOD Party is concerned that the country’s housing programme is being manipulated by some, whilst others remain desperate and homeless on the housing waiting list. In Drakenstein, residents who have been lucky enough to be recipients of title deeds have chosen to rather rent out their properties instead of making it their forever homes. This practice is unfair to the hundreds of thousands of people desperately waiting for their housing opportunity. But the problem is much bigger than Drakenstein, in a written response to GOOD’s query, Lizz Baron, Drakenstein Human Settlements MMC admitted “There is nothing in legislation or policy whether at National, Provincial or Local level to prevent this practice. The purchase agreement and the title deed only provide for the 8 year clause in which a person may not sell the house.” This is a fundamental flaw in our housing policy. GOOD calls on those working within Human Settlements to urgently intervene and address this travesty.
