Today, on World Cancer Day, we unite globally to raise awareness about cancer and emphasize the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment. Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide, but understanding its risk factors and preventive measures can significantly reduce its impact.
*Carcinogens in Our Environment*
Carcinogens are substances that can lead to cancer by altering cellular metabolism or damaging DNA.Common environmental carcinogens include:
- *Tobacco Smoke*: primary cause of lung cancer, affecting both smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke.
- *Air Pollution*: recent studies have shown a rise in lung cancer diagnoses among never-smokers, with air pollution playing a significant role.
- *Processed Foods*: High consumption of processed and ultra-processed foods has been linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
- *Chemicals*: Exposure to substances like asbestos, benzene, and certain pesticides can increase cancer risk.
