Cefuroxime is available in both oral (cefuroxime axetil) and injectable (cefuroxime sodium) formulations. The oral formulation, cefuroxime axetil, is a prodrug that is hydrolysed into active cefuroxime in the body. For optimal absorption, cefuroxime axetil is best taken with food. When taking cefuroxime, it is essential to complete the full course as prescribed to prevent antibiotic resistance. While generally well tolerated, side effects may include gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, or allergic reactions in some patients. Always consult a healthcare professional before use, particularly for individuals with a history of penicillin or cephalosporin allergies. Cefuroxime is contraindicated with the BCG live vaccine and cholera vaccine due to pharmacodynamic antagonism, which may reduce their effectiveness. It can inhibit bacterial replication needed for BCG immunity and inactivate the live cholera vaccine strain, making vaccination ineffective. To ensure proper immune response, the BCG vaccine should be administered only after completing antibiotic treatment, while the cholera vaccine should not be given within 14 days of antibiotic use.
