True Friendship "okusharana ahanda" in Ankore > AnkundaOmunyankore > 0770460203 True Friendship where there is unwavering trust between friends is one of the most beautiful things one can experience in life. Ankole/Nkore, the Banyankole (people of Nkore) had a ritual just for that. In the ritual, the participants were spiritually bound together by taking a coffee bean and splitting it into two, dipping it in each others blood cut from the umbilical code and then the participants ate either side the bean. This ritual called "okusharana ahanda" was considered sacred and if any of the participants betrayed his/her mate with whom he took the ritual, he/she was liable to punishment by society or the the gods of the land. When the British colonial agent Capt. Frederick Lugard arrived in Ankole in 1891, the King of Ankole at the time demanded he undertakes the ritual with him to avoid any treachery between Lugard and the monarch before signing a protection treaty between the kingdom and IBEACo. Coffee was considered to be of significant spiritual importance having been introduced to the region by the legendary gods of the land- the Bacwezi.
