*OK Stores and the myth of Presidential blame: a deeper look*
| Sun Feb 2, 2025
In the Great Republic of Zimbabwe, it has become a ritual to blame HE President Dr ED Mnangagwa whenever a business shuts its doors. This trend overlooks a fundamental truth: the President is not the CEO of these companies. The private sector operates independently, often with its own motives that may not align with national interests.
The recent closure of OK Stores is a case in point. While many are quick to point fingers, we must remember that these establishments have roots in a colonial past. They were created during a time when our forebears labored under oppressive conditions, often with little compensation. OK Stores is a remnant of colonial capitalism, designed to benefit a select few while marginalizing the majority.

Today, as they announce closures, we see a tactical move to divert attention from pressing issues, particularly the land reform movement currently in the legislative tables in neighboring Great Republic of South Africa. The fear of a successful, economically stable Great Republic of Zimbabwe threatens those who wish to maintain neo-colonial control. By causing alarm within our communities, these businesses aim to stir unrest and distract from the significant progress being made in the Great Republic of South Africa’s land expropriation without compensation program.

Another festering wound and critical point of contention is the recent introduction of title deeds for land ownership by President Mnangagwa. This move directly challenges the colonial legacy that OK Zimbabwe Limited represents. The belief among these entities was that retaining land on an offer letter basis would allow them to navigate legal frameworks and potentially reclaim it if their political aspirations were realized and that of course when their longstanding dream of removing the Revolutionary Ruling ZANU PF Party from power would come true! Now, with title deeds, the prospect of returning land to the colonizers is significantly diminished, adding to their frustration.
The narrative that portrays President Mnangagwa as the architect of economic failure serves to mask the real agenda at play. The strategic shutdowns of retailers like OK Stores are not mere business decisions; they are calculated efforts to undermine the Great Republic of Zimbabwe’s growth and stability. These actions aim to create chaos and unrest, especially in urban communities where opposition sentiments run high.
The true challenge lies in recognizing that the fight against economic sabotage requires a united front. As Zimbabweans, we must look beyond the surface and understand the forces at play. The struggle for dignity and land in our neighboring Great Republic of South Africa like I said, is intertwined with our own journey. The liberation of land from historical oppressors is a fight that resonates deeply, and we should not allow distractions to derail us.
Having said all this, let us not be swayed by the blame game that seeks to pit us against our Leadership. Instead, let us focus on building a resilient economy and reclaiming our narratives. The fight for our land and rights is one that demands our full attention and commitment. Together, we can create a future where every Zimbabwean thrives, unshackled from the chains of colonial legacy.
