*The rise of cyber-bullying: A call for responsible expression*
| Thur Feb 7, 2025
```In recent times, the Great Republic of Zimbabwe has witnessed a disturbing trend: the rise of cyber bullying under the guise of media freedom and the fight against corruption. Citizen reporters and social media activists have taken to online platforms to vilify and degrade individuals, particularly targeting prominent figures such as HE President Dr ED Mnangagwa. This behavior, framed as a pursuit of accountability, has escalated to a point where it threatens the very moral fabric of our society.
While the Constitution of the Great Republic of Zimbabwe guarantees freedom of expression, this freedom should not come at the expense of another's right to dignity and respect. President Mnangagwa, as the constitutionally elected Leader, has every right to express himself and his policies without being subjected to unwarranted attacks that can cause emotional harm. His silence in the face of such criticism does not indicate weakness; rather, it reflects his diplomatic resilience and commitment to the Nation.
The responsibility lies with all of us to ensure that our digital platforms are used for constructive dialogue rather than as tools for harassment and intimidation. The Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere, has emphasized that while the Government supports democratic processes and media growth, it will not tolerate violations of citizens' rights. The laws are clear: using social media to coerce or intimidate others is illegal and can lead to severe consequences.
This is a crucial moment for our Nation. We must collectively rise above political whims and allow the NDA — National Development Agenda to take precedence. Unity and peace should be our guiding principles as we strive for a corruption-free society. President Mnangagwa's foresight for National Vision 2030 seeks to uplift all Zimbabweans, and it is imperative that we support this National Development cause rather than undermine it through harmful rhetoric.
As we move forward, let us commit to breaking the cycle of self-destructive behavior that only serves to undermine our progress. We must honor our National Anthem not just with words but with actions that reflect respect for our Leaders and each other. Together, we can create an enabling environment that fosters growth, accountability, and a shared future of prosperity.
Let us stand against cyber bullying and embrace responsible communication. The future of the Great Republic of Zimbabwe depends on our ability to engage in respectful discourse and uphold the dignity of every citizen.```
