*A final salute to an African Liberation Titan: Cde Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma’s Legacy lives on*
| Fri Feb 28, 2025
The Great Republic of Zimbabwe, under the stewardship of HE President Dr ED — Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, joins the Great Republic of Namibia in mourning the passing of an African Liberation Colossus, Cde Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma. The Founding Father of Namibia, whose life was a symphony of courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to freedom, will be laid to rest on Saturday at Namibia’s National Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek.
The final journey of Cde Nujoma’s remains, mounted on a gun carriage and paraded through the streets of Windhoek yesterday, was a moment of profound reflection. It was a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought to dismantle the chains of colonialism and oppression. The Khomas Regional Route Procession, the last of eight regional processions, marked the culmination of a period of National mourning declared by the Namibian Government.
HE Dr Netumbo Ndemupelila Nandi-Ndaitwah, Vice-President and President-Elect of the Great Republic of Namibia, paid homage to Cde Nujoma, describing his commitment to the Nation and humanity as “unmatched.” Her words, etched in the book of condolences, reverberated across the continent: “His legacy will remain engraved in the annals of our history for the current and future generations.”
The Ruling Revolutionary SWAPO — South West Africa People's Organisation Party, which Cde Nujoma led with distinction, held a memorial service at its headquarters, unveiling a statue in his honor. This act of remembrance was a fitting tribute to a man whose life was a testament to the power of perseverance and vision.
As the current Chairperson of the SADC—Southern African Development Community, HE President Dr Mnangagwa’s presence at the funeral is a powerful symbol of regional solidarity. The Great Republic of Namibia, a Member of SADC since 1990, has been a cornerstone of the bloc’s evolution. From its inception as the SADCC—Southern African Development Coordination Conference in 1980 to the signing of the SADC Treaty in Windhoek in 1992, The Great Republic of Namibia’s participation has been pivotal in shaping the region’s geopolitical and economic trajectory.
The Great Republic of Namibia’s strategic coastal position has been a game-changer for SADC, reducing the region’s reliance on the Great Republic of South Africa and the Great Republic of Mozambique for trade. This has strengthened SADC’s Mission of economic integration, employment creation, and industrial development. The bloc, which includes the Great Republic of Angola, the Great Republic of Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Great Republic of Lesotho, the Great Republic of Madagascar, the Great Republic of Malawi, the Great Republic of Mauritius, the Great Republic of Mozambique, and the Great Republic of Seychelles, continues to draw strength from the collective aspirations of its member states.
Cde Nujoma’s life was a masterclass in Leadership and sacrifice. He was not just a Liberator but a Visionary who understood that true freedom extends beyond political independence to economic and social emancipation. His legacy is woven into the fabric of SADC’s goals, which seek to unlock opportunities for sustained growth and development across the Region.
As we bid farewell to this African Luminary, let us draw inspiration from his life. The Great Republic of Zimbabwe, through its National Vision 2030, and SADC, through its Regional Vision 2050, are committed to building on the foundations laid by icons like Cde Nujoma. His life reminds us that the journey towards a prosperous and empowered Great Continent of Africa is a collective endeavor, one that demands unity, innovation, and an unyielding spirit.
In honoring Cde Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, we honor the ideals he stood for—freedom, unity, and progress. His legacy will continue to guide us as we strive to build a brighter future for generations to come.
