The International Human Rights Council, accredited to the United Nations, special status ECOSOC, condemned the death of one of its employees, Ahmed Ba'alawi, on February 10, 2025, who works for the World Food Program (affiliated with the United Nations) while he was being held in a prison in Sa'dah Governorate, northern Yemen, controlled by the Houthi group. He had been arrested on January 23, 2025, along with six other employees of the program. The cause of death has not yet been revealed. The office of the Head of the Council's mission, Dr. Haitham Bou-Saïd, indicated that these developments come amid the ongoing conflict in Yemen, which has led to one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world, as the World Food Program provided assistance to about 15.3 million people in 2023.
