The head of the International Council for Human Rights mission to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Haitham Abu Saeed, indicated that it is clear that there is great concern about the political and social transformations in Syria, especially with regard to the current leadership and the effects that may result from this on the various components of the population. There seems to be fears that new repressive methods will be used that may be more severe than those witnessed in the country in the past. He added that talk of “slaughter” as an alternative to “shabiha” indicates the possibility of using force in a more organized and directed manner against opponents or minorities, which raises questions about the future of peaceful coexistence in the country. It is important that Syrians are able to express their opinions and concerns freely, and that the international community is able to support their efforts towards achieving justice and equality.
