The Communist Party Marxist Kenya stands firmly with the dock workers of Mombasa, who are under siege by both the state and exploitative capitalists. Amidst state repression and violent crackdowns, our National Chairperson, Comrade Mwaivu Kaluka, convened a crucial meeting to rally workers against the injustices they face daily.
Comrade Shillingi Shevo, along with five other workers, appears in court today on trumped-up charges, while Comrade Michael Mugena remains in remand prison, his health deteriorating rapidly. Their only crime? Organising workers to demand fair wages, safe working conditions, and the right to an independent trade union. The state’s refusal to register a waterfront workers’ union is a blatant attack on workers’ rights; an injustice that is now being challenged at the tribunal.
The meeting exposed the brutal conditions dock workers endure. Mercenaries hired by warehouse owners continue to brutalise and even kill workers, operating with impunity under police protection. The introduction of brokers as middlemen has created a new layer of exploitation, forcing workers to pay extra fees just to access jobs; squeezing them even further into poverty.
Comrade Kaluka cautioned against any private negotiations of the collective bargaining agreement between warehouse owners and a handful of workers. Only through unity and organised struggle can the collective interests of the workers be safeguarded and advanced.
The Party condemns the inhumane working conditions at the docks. Workers are exposed to hazardous chemicals and poisonous substances without protection, leaving many with permanent scars on their backs and hands. This is a crime against the working class, and we demand immediate safety reforms!
Beyond this, the suffering of retired dock workers is a glaring indictment of the capitalist state. Having toiled for years, they are left with no social security, their contributions to the NSSF looted by corrupt officials. This is the reality of capitalist Kenya; a system built on the theft of workers’ labour!
The Communist Party Marxist Kenya reaffirms its commitment to the dock workers’ struggle. We call on all workers, progressives, and revolutionaries to stand in solidarity. Organise against exploitation! Resist state repression! Fight back against capitalist oppression!
Victory belongs to the workers!
Workers of Kenya, unite!
