Today, February 8th, we honor the lives of two remarkable saints:
Saint Jerome Emiliani (1486-1537)
*Life*
Jerome Emiliani was born in Venice, Italy, into a noble family. He was educated in law and philosophy but later became a soldier. During a battle, he was captured and imprisoned. While in prison, Jerome had a profound spiritual experience, which led him to dedicate his life to serving others.
*Ministry*
After his release from prison, Jerome began caring for the sick, the poor, and orphans. He founded the Somaschi Fathers, a congregation dedicated to serving the needy, especially children and the sick. Jerome also established several hospitals, orphanages, and schools.
*Legacy*
Saint Jerome Emiliani is revered for his selfless service, compassion, and dedication to the marginalized. He was canonized in 1767.
Saint Josephine Bakhita (1869-1947)
*Life*
Josephine Bakhita was born in Darfur, Sudan. She was kidnapped and sold into slavery at a young age. Bakhita suffered greatly under her cruel masters but found solace in her faith. She was eventually freed and became a nun with the Canossian Sisters in Italy.
*Ministry*
As a nun, Bakhita dedicated her life to serving others, especially the poor and the sick. She became known for her kindness, compassion, and generosity. Bakhita also worked tirelessly to promote the abolition of slavery.
*Legacy*
Saint Josephine Bakhita is revered for her remarkable resilience, faith, and dedication to serving others. She was canonized in 2000.
Both Saint Jerome Emiliani and Saint Josephine Bakhita inspire us with their selfless service, compassion, and devotion to their faith.
