Upwork Clients Keep Asking For Free Samples – What Should You Do?
A freelancer recently shared their frustration about how Upwork is becoming increasingly difficult. They work as a video editor and, despite being Top Rated, they constantly receive requests for free sample videos before clients even consider hiring them.
They explained that they are often asked for a one-minute free trial, even though they already provide past work samples related to the client’s niche. They also showcase their video editing timeline inside their software as proof of their work, but many clients still insist on a custom sample using their script and voice-over.
This has happened multiple times, leaving them feeling stuck. Some of these clients have nearly 100% hiring rates and an average spending of over $25K, making it difficult to decide whether to refuse or comply.
I advised them to say no to new clients who demand free work but to consider providing a free sample for well-established clients, as they might be looking for a long-term collaboration and just need assurance of their skills before hiring. I also shared my own hiring process—when hiring a web developer, I assign them six small coding tasks. Those who complete them successfully get hired, and many have been working with me for several years now.
Even if a free sample doesn’t lead to a job, it doesn’t have to go to waste. I suggested repurposing it for personal branding—posting it on LinkedIn, YouTube, or other platforms to attract clients outside of Upwork.
The freelancer found this perspective helpful and realized that Upwork is not the only option for finding clients.
Freelancing can be frustrating, but the right strategy can turn challenges into new opportunities.
