𝐀𝐥𝐥-𝐢𝐧-𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐖𝐏 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩 – 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 If you’ve ever needed to move your WordPress site to a new hosting provider or just wanted a reliable backup, you’ve probably come across the 𝐀𝐥𝐥-𝐢𝐧-𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐖𝐏 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩 plugin. It’s one of the easiest ways to export your entire WordPress site—into a single .wpress file. Then, you can import this file into a new WordPress installation using the same plugin. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is... until you run into problems with bigger websites—especially on shared hosting services. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐨 𝐈𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 If your migration fails and you no longer have access to the original website to try another backup method, don’t panic! There’s still a way to extract your files and manually restore your website. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟏: 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 .𝐰𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 To get your files out, search for "wpress extractor" on GitHub. This is a free command-line tool that lets you extract the contents of your .wpress file. Download the extractor from GitHub. Create a directory where you want your files to be extracted. Copy the downloaded extractor to that directory. Copy your .wpress file to the same directory. Open a command prompt. Navigate to the directory you created. If your directory is C:\Wordpress-Backup, run: cd C:\Wordpress-Backup Run the extraction command: wpress-extractor For example, if your backup file is fifthsegment.wpress, run: wpress-extractor fifthsegment.wpress Your files will be extracted into the same directory where the extractor was run. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟐: 𝐔𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐰𝐩-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐫 Once you’ve extracted the files, you need to manually upload them to your new WordPress installation: Use an FTP client (like FileZilla) or your hosting’s File Manager. Navigate to the wp-content folder of your new WordPress installation. Delete the existing wp-content folder and upload the one you extracted. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟑: 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 Your .wpress backup also contains a SQL database file. Before importing it into your new hosting, you need to update the table prefix to match your new WordPress installation. Open the extracted .sql file in a text editor. Search and replace the old table prefix with the new one. The prefix is found in your wp-config.php file under $table_prefix. Save the updated .sql file`. Log in to phpMyAdmin on your new hosting.
