Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) and Baraza Media Lab will host the first edition of the Human Rights Journalism Awards, which will recognize and celebrate reporters who defend human rights, during the third edition of the Africa Media Festival 2025. In the face of the rising cases of human rights violations through abductions and forced disappearances. Amid shrinking freedom of the press on the continent, journalists continue to weather the storm to spotlight different human rights abuses by speaking truth to power. This call to duty and selfless service to their countries speaks volumes to the important role the media plays in keeping governments in check. This award aims to honour and publicly recognize the critical work of journalists in Africa who have demonstrated extraordinary courage and innovation in their reporting, promoting and protect fellow citizens' human rights and fundamental freedoms. A committee of experts drawn from the media and civil society will evaluate and recognize the contribution of journalists whose stories have promoted and protected human rights. The nominations are open to African journalists who have courageously covered human rights violations within or outside their country of jurisdiction. Nominations can be done by organizations, media entities, or individuals themselves wishing to be considered.
