Chel Snakehead: A Rare Fish Rediscovered After 85 Years A rare freshwater fish, the Chel snakehead (Channa amphibeus), has been rediscovered in India after being thought extinct for over 80 years. This exciting discovery was announced in the scientific journal Zootaxa on January 31, 2025. The Chel snakehead was last recorded between 1918 and 1933 in the Himalayan region of India. For decades, scientists believed the species had disappeared forever. However, in 2024, three specimens were found on the banks of the Chel River in Kalimpong, West Bengal. Surprisingly, researchers learned that local tribes have been consuming this fish for years, unaware of its rarity. This discovery has sparked interest in conservation efforts to protect the species. Snakehead fish are known for their ability to survive in low-oxygen waters and even move on land for short distances. The Chel snakehead’s return gives hope that other rare species may still exist in hidden corners of nature. This finding highlights the importance of protecting freshwater ecosystems and studying local biodiversity. Scientists now aim to research and preserve this unique species.
