*CATEGORY OF PEOPLE TO GIVE FIDYAH FOR THEIR MISSED FASTING OF RAMADAN* Shaykh Arafāt bin Hasan al-Muḥammadī (حفظه الله) said: There are 5 individuals who are not upon to repay the missed fasting of Ramadan if they don't have the ability to fast except that they give out Fidyah (food to the poor, fasting person): - A pregnant woman - A breastfeeding woman - An elderly man who can't fast - An elderly woman who can't fast - A person with chronic disease such as cancer However, the four Imams [Abu Hanifah, Malik, ash-Shāfi’i, and Ahmad] hold that pregnant and breastfeeding women must repay the missed fasting; they only differ based on Fidyah. Abdullāh Ibn 'Umar and Abdullāh Ibn Abbās held the view and gave Fatawa during their lifetime that the pregnant and breastfeeding woman only need to give out Fidyah, and we don't know of any of the Companions that contradict Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbās on this view. However, if a person says to be on the safer side, the pregnant and breastfeeding woman must repay the missed fasting, we say there is no harm. But you will never find any evidence of this in the Shari'ah. Paraphrased & summarised.
