*Suspected Bomb Threat Forces American Airlines Boeing 787-9 Diversion To Rome*
On Sunday, February 23, 2025, American Airlines Flight 292, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner en route from New York's JFK International Airport to New Delhi, was diverted to Rome due to a bomb threat. The aircraft, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, was approximately two hours from its destination when it made an abrupt U-turn over Turkmenistan, heading back toward Europe. Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets escorted the plane to Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport, where it landed safely. Upon inspection, the threat was deemed non-credible. Passengers underwent additional security screenings, and the flight was scheduled to continue to New Delhi the following day after required crew rest.
This incident marks the second security scare for American Airlines this year. Earlier in February, a flight from Austin to Charlotte was delayed for over four hours after a passenger's Wi-Fi hotspot was discovered with the name "I have a bomb." The unsettling hotspot name prompted authorities to evacuate the plane and conduct thorough security checks before allowing the flight to proceed.
These consecutive incidents have raised concerns about airline security and the protocols in place to address potential threats, highlighting the challenges airlines face in ensuring passenger safety while minimizing disruptions.
