*Community Grieves Chief Masivamele's Death, Blames Government*
The Chiredzi community is in mourning following the tragic deaths of Titus Musengi, known as Chief Masivamele, and his son, Sabhuku Masenyani Robert, who both passed away on Valentine's Day. Many community members are directing their anger towards the government, alleging negligence in healthcare services that contributed to the chief's death.
From reports received by Tihlo Ra Le Hlengweni News Before his passing, Chief Masivamele faced exorbitant charges from a private ambulance service. Community reports indicate that he was billed R24,000 by Discovery Ambulances for transport to Masvingo, located 195.5 kilometers away. This situation has raised eyebrows, especially given the promise of aircraft ambulances donated by Russia in 2019, which were intended to alleviate such healthcare crises.
"Where are the helicopter ambulances that were promised to us?" questioned a community member, highlighting their frustration over the lack of available emergency services. Many noted that the only aircraft ambulance services they see are through Discovery Ambulances, a private company with ties to the government.
Concern over the perceived connections between government officials and private ambulance services has intensified. "When I saw a lion and some scarf colors on Discovery Ambulance services, I knew who might be behind this business," remarked a local resident, suggesting that political favoritism may be influencing healthcare quality.
Discovery Ambulances, co-founded by David and Chantelle Munowenyu, has come under scrutiny for its high fees. They claim to have been inspired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's Presidential Envoy, Uebert Angel. Critics argue that the service exploits patients in critical conditions, knowing they have few alternatives.
One community member recounted that Chief Masivamele's family had to pay USD $400 as a deposit. Unfortunately, the ambulance arrived too late, and the chief was already deceased by the time help arrived.
The Chiredzi community, a significant contributor to Zimbabwe's economy, has long called for improved healthcare infrastructure. Many believe that better services could have prevented this tragedy. "We could have provided high-quality delivery services, sufficient roads, and enough clinics long ago," lamented a local leader.
As the community continues to grieve, political parties have begun to express their condolences. Reverend Masungwini, leader of the Chiredzi-based UMFA party, extended his sympathies to the Masivamele family, stating, "It is a huge loss. May God comfort us in this challenging time."
The Zimbabwe National Congress (ZNC) also expressed heartfelt condolences, while Abigail Munyoro, president of the Zimbabwe Independent Movement, condemned the authorities for their failures in healthcare. "Lives could have been saved if proper services were accessible," she stated, criticizing the inadequate medical care that left patients in dire situations.
As preparations for the chief's and his son's burials are underway, the Chiredzi community is rallying support, with members in the diaspora contributing to the funding efforts. The tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths continue to spark outrage, putting pressure on the government to address the failing healthcare system.
