The two projects will focus on muskrat distribution and ecology in Illinois to inform their status and identify potential drivers of their decline. The academic home for the positions is at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois under the supervision of Dr. Guillaume Bastille-Rousseau. This is a well-funded project in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and the graduate students will be expected to assist in hiring and managing field technicians to support fieldwork. Although each student’s research questions will be unique, they will be expected to collaborate closely and assist each other with fieldwork and data collection. Project 1: Modelling statewide distribution of muskrat using UAVs – MS positionThis project will focus on testing and validating the use of UAVs to assess muskrat relative abundance around the state. Using this information, the student will also perform large scale analysis of terrestrial and aquatic habitat characteristics impacting muskrat abundance. Project 2: Population ecology of muskrat – PhD positionThis project will compare muskrat space-use and survival at several focal sites with different habitat characteristics. The project will involve trapping and fitting muskrats with transmitters, including potentially developing and testing novel ways of tracking muskrat. The project will also leverage ongoing efforts at different sites to restore floodplains to assess recolonization potential of muskrat. Qualifications: • BSc or MS (for PhD applicants) in Ecology, Wildlife Ecology, or Biology, or a closely related field, with a strong academic record. • Excellent quantitative skills. Experience in R and ArcGIS/Pro software. • Knowledge regarding spatial ecology. • Ability to perform fieldwork. • Excellent written and oral communication skills including a demonstrated ability or potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals. • Motivated with an excellent work ethic. • For MS position: Previous experience operating UAVs is desirable • For PhD position: Previous experience capturing and handling mammals is desirable To apply: Submit a single pdf that includes a cover letter summarizing your qualifications and interest in the position, followed by CV, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for three references to Dr. Guillaume Bastille-Rousseau ([email protected]). The email subject should indicate whether you are applying to the MS or PhD position (i.e. “MS muskrat” or “PhD muskrat”). Project 2:📚 MS or PhD assistantship – Evaluation of novel approaches for assessing white-tailed deer densityLocation: Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, IllinoisSalary: Range: $25k + tuition waiver and health care accessStart date: August 2025Last date to apply: 02/23/2025Description: The Spatial Wildlife Ecology Lab at Southern Illinois University is seeking an outstanding MSor PhD student beginning Fall 2025. The student’s project will focus on developing, field testing and implementing, and comparing several approaches to assess white-tailed deer density in different landscapes across Illinois. Examples of approaches will include the use of camera traps, road surveys using forward looking infrared (FLIR) as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal cameras. Furthermore, the student will also participate in integrating site-level density estimate into scalable integrated models of deer density in Illinois. The academic home for the position is at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois under the supervision of Dr. Guillaume Bastille-Rousseau and Dr. Brent Pease. This is a project in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Qualifications: • BSc or MS (for PhD applicants) in Ecology, Wildlife Ecology, or Biology, or a closely related field, with a strong academic record. • Excellent quantitative skills. Experience in R and ArcGIS/Pro software. • Previous experience with camera traps data, road surveys, or operating UAVs is desirable. • Knowledge regarding spatial ecology. • Ability to perform fieldwork. • Excellent written and oral communication skills including a demonstrated ability or potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals. • Motivated with an excellent work ethic. To apply: Submit a single pdf that includes a cover letter summarizing your qualifications and interest in the position, followed by CV, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for three references to Dr. Guillaume Bastille-Rousseau ([email protected]).
