*UPHOLD TAWRAH* Allah says in surah al-Ma'idah: [قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَسْتُمْ عَلَىٰ شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ تُقِيمُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِيلَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۗ وَلَيَزِيدَنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُم مَّا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ طُغْيَانًا وَكُفْرًا ۖ فَلَا تَأْسَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ] Say, "O People of the Book, you have nothing to stand on until you uphold the Tawrah, the Injeel, and what was sent down to your from your Lord." And what was revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over a disbelieving people. [68] In part of his commentary on this ayah, al-Tabari wrote: [حدثنا هناد بن السري وأبو كريب قالا : حدثنا يونس بن بكير قال ، حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق قال ، حدثني محمد بن أبي محمد مولى زيد بن ثابت ، عن عكرمة ، أو عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس قال : جاء رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رافع بن حارثة وسلام بن مشكم ، ومالك بن الصيف ، ورافع بن حريملة ، فقالوا : يا محمد ، ألست تزعم أنك على ملة إبراهيم ودينه ، [ ص: 474 ] وتؤمن بما عندنا من التوراة ، وتشهد أنها من الله حق ؟ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : "بلى ، ولكنكم أحدثتم وجحدتم ما فيها مما أخذ عليكم من الميثاق ، وكتمتم منها ما أمرتم أن تبينوه للناس ، وأنا بريء من أحداثكم! قالوا : فإنا نأخذ بما في أيدينا ، فإنا على الحق والهدى ، ولا نؤمن بك ، ولا نتبعك ! فأنزل الله تعالى ذكره : " قل يا أهل الكتاب لستم على شيء حتى تقيموا التوراة والإنجيل وما أنزل إليكم من ربكم " إلى : "فلا تأس على القوم الكافرين" . ] Ibn 'Abbaas said: Rafi' ibn Harithah, Salam ibn Mishkam, Malik ibn al-Sayf, and Rafi' ibn Huraymilah came to Allah's Messenger and said, "O Muhammad, don't you claim that you are following Ibrahim's religion, and that you believe in the Tawrah we have with us, and that you testify that it is truly from Allah?" Allah's Messenger replied, "Of course, except that you have innovated and denied the oath that He took from you in it and concealed parts of it that He commanded you to convey to the people, and I have no part in what you have innovated!" They said, "We will stick to what we have, for we are on the truth and the true guidance. We will neither believe in you nor follow you!" Allah then revealed this ayah.
