BENEFIT: A Forgotten Sunnah After Reciting The Qur'ān It is recommended to say the following supplication upon concluding the recitation of the Qurʾān: سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ. (Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdik, lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk) Evidence for This Sunnah ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ never sat in a gathering, recited the Qurʾān, or performed prayer without concluding it with certain words." She further inquired: "O Messenger of Allāh, I have noticed that you never sit in a gathering, recite the Qurʾān, or perform prayer without ending with these words." The Prophet ﷺ responded: "Yes, whoever speaks good words, they will serve as a seal for the good he has done. And whoever utters something wrong, these words will serve as an expiation for his mistakes." Then he recited: سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ. The Neglect of This Sunnah Today Regrettably, this Sunnah has been largely abandoned by many people today—either due to ignorance or forgetfulness. Instead, it has been replaced with practices such as saying *ṢadaqAllāh-ul-ʿAẓīm* or kissing the Qurʾān after recitation. It is, therefore, essential to revive and spread awareness of this Sunnah so that it may once again become widely practiced. ------------------ Authentication of the ḥadīth Imām an-Nasā'ee titled a chapter in his book: "What to Say Upon Completing the Recitation of the Qur'ān." An-Nasā’ee verified the ḥadīth’s chain as authentic in As-Sunan Al-Kubrā. Ibn Ḥajar affirmed in An-Nukat (2/733) that its chain is sound. Al-Albānī also authenticated it in Silsilat Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥah (7/495), stating that it meets the criteria of Imām Muslim. Sheikh Muqbil Al-Wādi’ee classified it as authentic in Al-Jāmi’ As-Ṣaḥīḥ Mimma Laysa fī Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn (2/128) NOTE: Sheikh Yahya ḥafidhahullāh stated (paraphrasing): أحسن ما في الباب حديث عائشة في الصحيح المسند، وليس فيه لفظة "أشهد"، وإنما وردت في حديث أبي برزة وغيره، وفيها ضعفٌ؛ لكنها في الباب، فلا بأس بقولها. اهـ بتصرف من درس الصحيح المسند لشيخنا يحيى. The most authentic narration in this chapter is the ḥadīth of ’Ā'ishah in As-Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Musnad, which does not include the phrase "Ashhadu." However, this phrase appears in the hadith of Abū Barzah and others (such as Abu Hurairah), though with some weakness.
