BENEFIT 340: Is it true that the Earth is round, like an egg or a sphere? Sheikh Aḥmad An-Najmi raḥimahullāh answered: I say that the Earth's spherical shape is an undeniable fact. This is evident from the time differences between various regions; for example, when it is before noon in America, we in the Arabian Peninsula are between Maghrib and Isha, with a time difference of approximately 8 to 10 hours. This is clear evidence of the Earth's spherical shape. However, the issue of contention is whether the Earth rotates or remains stationary. Allāh, the Almighty, describes the sun as moving while referring to the Earth as stable, as stated in: {ولكم في الأرض مستقر ومتاع إلى حينٍ} "And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and provision for a time." [Qur’an 2:36] and {الله الذي جعل لكم الأرض قرارا والسماء بناء وصوركم فأحسن صوركم} "It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure and formed you and perfected your forms."
