*Taraweeh rakats as per authentic hadith* The number of Taraweeh rakats has been a topic of scholarly discussion. According to authentic Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself used to pray 8 rakats of Taraweeh followed by 3 rakats of Witr. Evidence from Hadith: 1. Narrated by Aisha (رضي الله عنها): "The Prophet (ﷺ) never prayed more than 11 rakats in Ramadan or in any other month. He used to pray 4 rakats, let alone how good and long they were, then 4 rakats, let alone how good and long they were, and then 3 rakats (Witr)." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1147) 2. Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنه): "The Prophet (ﷺ) led us in prayer during Ramadan with 8 rakats and then Witr." (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith 1070, which scholars have graded authentic) *Why 20 Rakats in Many Mosques?* During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه), 20 rakats of Taraweeh were established for the congregation in the mosque to make it easier for the people to follow along. This practice has continued in many parts of the world. However, it is important to note that this is considered a matter of Ijtihad (juristic opinion) and is not against the Sunnah. *Conclusion:* 8 rakats is based on the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). 20 rakats is based on the practice of Sahabah (companions), particularly Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه). Both practices are permissible, and it is up to individual preference and local tradition.
