Shepherd Sekenhamo The Hon Mayor hosted Prof Wiseman Magwa from Midlands State University for a discussion focusing on #internationalmotherlanguageday that is commemorated globally on 21 February. Prof Magwa highlighted that there is no country that will fully develop whilst using a foreign language. Zimbabwe has introduced a dictionary that will enable subjects such as Science, Geography and Mathematics to be taught using indigenous languages. He went on to recommend that Zimbabwe introduces a Language Policy that will see Language Councils being put in place as a way of safeguarding the local languages. Looking the education sector, Prof Magwa recommended that Zimbabwe adopts and implements a Language and Education policy. According to UNESCO, one language disappears every two weeks, an irreparable loss for our collective cultural heritage. Prof Magwa has raised Zimbabwe's flag high as he is the current chairperson of the UNESCO Global Task Force On Indigenous Languages.
