M23 rebels who continue to gain territory in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday formally inaugurated new provincial leaders during a ceremony attended by citizens and was held at the governor’s office. The inauguration was held soon after President Felix Tshisekedi appointed a new governor for North Kivu, the province which houses the key trading city of Goma which was recently seized by M23. A day after M23 inaugurated the leaders, Eastern and Southern African leaders met in Tanzania’s capital, Dar es Salaam, to discuss how to address the growing conflict in DRC. Included in the resolutions from the summit was “engagement in dialogue with non-state parties, including the M23 rebels,” according to a statement released by Kenya’s foreign ministry on X. 📸: M23 leaders inaugurating new provincial leaders.
