Kariba Dam's usable water storage capacity for hydroelectric power generation has increased, offering optimism for enhanced electricity output. Although the water levels are still 10.2 percentage points lower than the corresponding period last year, the current live storage stands at 6.1% of the reservoir's total capacity. In comparison, the live storage was 16.3% during the same period in the previous year.
Prolonged drought conditions have led to a significant decline in water levels at Kariba Dam, necessitating substantial reductions in power generation by both Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Zambia's ZESCO Limited, resulting in extended load-shedding periods in both countries.
