WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOUR TOOTH IS ALREADY DECAYING? 1) If the decay is still in the early stage (White spots and mild sensitivity) At this stage, the enamel is weak but not fully broken down. You can go in with: - Brushing 2x a day with a fluoride toothpaste - Reducing sugar intake, eating foods rich in calcium, and drinking a lot of water - Maintain good oral hygiene by flossing and using mouthwash. 2) If there’s a small cavity (Mild to moderate decay) Once decay breaks through the enamel and forms a cavity, it won’t heal naturally. Your dentist may recommend: - Dental fillings - Silver diamine fluoride, which is a liquid that stops decay in its tracks 3) If the cavity is deep (Severe decay, pain or infection) Treatment options include: - Dental crowns - Root canal - Tooth extraction, if the tooth is beyond saving. If you have a tooth abscess (severe infection, swelling or pus) This is a dental emergency. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent the infection from spreading. It’s best to see a dentist immediately.
