*MD of Taber Update: 2025 Alberta Irrigation Districts Association Conference*
This past week, Reeve Miyanaga had the honour of attending the 2025 Alberta Irrigation Districts Association (AIDA) Conference in Calgary as a guest speaker on the Shared Water Management Panel. The conference provided valuable insights into the critical role of irrigation in securing a potable water supply and sustaining food production. Discussions focused on key issues such as water security, drought management, irrigation expansion, and the risks posed by invasive species.
A highlight of the event was the recognition of former *St. Mary River Irrigation District chair Gary Franz,* who is currently co-chair of the *Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee* , which includes the *Horsefly Regional Emergency Spillway Project.* Gary received the 2025 AIDA Award for his outstanding contributions to irrigation and drainage. In his speech, Gary emphasized the transformative impact of irrigation on communities, the economy, and #canadaspremierfoodcorridor.
During the conference, Reeve Miyanaga reaffirmed Council’s commitment to advocating for water security, drought resilience, and responsible water management. As we continue to face challenges related to water scarcity, the MD of Taber's priority remains finding sustainable solutions for our residents, industries, and agricultural producers.
Water security is not just about turning on the tap—it is about securing Alberta’s future. For more information about the Alberta Irrigation Districts Association please visit: https://www.albertairrigation.ca/
