*NHS England Approves Groundbreaking Gene Therapy for Severe Sickle Cell Disease*
England has become one of the first countries to approve exagamglogene autotemcel (exa-cel), a revolutionary CRISPR-based gene therapy, for treating severe sickle cell disease (SCD). The therapy, also known as Casgevy and developed by Vertex, offers a potential cure by editing patients’ own stem cells to produce healthy red blood cells. Approved under a managed access scheme for patients aged 12 and over, exa-cel could eliminate complications associated with SCD and address healthcare inequalities. This milestone marks a transformative shift in treatment options, providing new hope for individuals living with the genetic disorder.
