*Presidency Denies 65% Electricity Tariff Hike, Focuses on Supply and Subsidies*
The Federal Government has dismissed reports of an imminent 65% electricity tariff increase, clarifying that its priority is improving power supply, expanding metering, and ensuring targeted subsidies. Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Arowolo Verheijen, explained that the current tariffs cover only 65% of the actual electricity cost, with the government subsidizing the rest. She emphasized that over N200 billion is spent monthly on subsidies, often benefiting wealthier Nigerians, and that reforms will focus on protecting low-income households while making electricity more accessible.
